Summary of LDC2013 day 1
The room quickly filled well before the official 9:30am start as new and seasoned Lasso devs came together for LassoDevCon 2013.
Each attendee received a swag bag containing:
- a sealed box (to be opened when instructed during the keynote) - later found to have black conference tshirts sporting a teaser for the new 9.3 version currently in development
- Certified Lasso Developer caps for CLD's,
- a set of shiny Lasso Stickers http://www.lassosoft.com/lassosoft-stickers-2013
- a customized set of military style dog-tags: 1 commemorating the conference in Camo blue, personalised set of 2 for CLDs in solid blue showing 'CLD since' date, and/or a set of 2 for Treefroggers in Green, see them from Ari Najarian's twitter post https://twitter.com/stickbyatlas/status/378168797879758848/photo/1
Sean Stephens opening keynote covered:
Announcement of the LassoGuide http://lassoguide.com/ now completely updated and available in multiple formats - including a full-size 620+ page book, online, downloadable, API, and App version for iPad coming soon.
LassoRef App
Online integration of issue tracking (for Docs, as well as Lasso 8, Lasso 9) with your LassoSoft account https://www.lassosoft.com/RhinoTrac
Big reveal announcement of Lasso "Spitfire" 9.3 complete with WW2 footage and Churchill speech. We will never surrender.
- Spitfire - advanced engineering - integrated web server that can serve directly on install without need for Apache or IIS config.
- LUX - totally re-worked Lasso Admin interface with the best of Lasso 8 admin, instances admin, and many many new features to make manager your server(s) easy.
- Spurs - tags/methods that can be saved as a 'spur' via your LassoSoft account that can be selected as a set on server install.
- Trident - modified and extended compile options that improve performance
Kyle Jessup showed off the Spitfire and described how the direct HTTPD serving worked
Jono Guthrie showed off LUX and went through the long list of features
Rachel Guthrie showed off the printed LassoGuide manuals - a hard cover, full colour sample, and a soft cover black and white sample.
Eric Knibbe demo'd the process of using ReST and Sphinx to create the LassoGuide documentation and quickly built new docs.
Paul Higgins showed the options and ins-and-outs of debugging - when to use what.
Fletcher Sandbeck gave a great view of Waterfall vs Agile vs Continuous delivery project methodologies.
Steffan Cline presented a clear definition of Procedural, MVC, and OOP programming and explained the impact of the different styles on code outputs.
The day's session ended with the up close and personal segment where attendees sat down to discuss specific questions, interests or needs with the LassoSoft team members. The room continued with a buzz until long after the official 5pm finish time, with code being reviewed, sites and systems discussed, license levels and upgrades explored, install questions answered and debugging assistance rendered.
As always hilarity from comments (and squirrels) appearing in Lassochat contributed to the fun and enthusiasm of the day.
New CLD's Ari Najarian, Chris Voorberg, Shao Miller, Eric Knibbe (yeah, he should have sat his test 2 years ago) and Ric Lewis (did sit last year) were awarded their CLD professional shirt and mug and welcomed to the CLD clan!
Commercial breaks included announcements of tshirts for sale, additional CLD mugs available for purchase by CLDs, and reminders to enter the Lasso Awards (!!) and the draw for Coda2.
Beverage hour has well past started and I'm off to join in.
ps. It's not too late for an overnight flight....
