In recognition of the New Zealanders on this list, I could not resist sharing this story…

For those not familiar with cross-Tasman rivalry, Australia is regularly accused of taking credit for things that New Zealanders regard as their own. Pavlova ( a dessert), Phar Lap (a horse), Russel Crowe (aging actor)… notably not Joh Bjelke-Petersen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joh_Bjelke-Petersen).
It brought a smile to my face to read that an expatriate New Zealand scientist has discovered: "the fossilised South Island bird and the emu evolved from a common ancestor, which originated in Australia but also spread to New Zealand."
